You let yourself be led by me out of the gazebo, onto a ballroom of moist
grass and blinking stars. I can only stare at your face, your short blond
hair softly illuminated by the moonlight. Out of the harsh glare of the
lights, your face looks more gentle, almost vulnerable. I look for the usual
hardness in your eyes, but find none.

You take me in your arms and we move to a silent waltz. I continue to stare
at your face. If I blink, you will disappear. You start softly humming, an
old tune. I recite the words in my head. I can't stop looking at you.

Step.....

I blink. Through the hazy curtain of tears blurring my vision, I can see
your gaze also locked on mine, but you move your lips to rest beside my ear.
I feel a hesitant intake of breath.

"Ino..."

I shake my head, and whisper, "Don't say any more, Jun. Please."

I cannot bear to look at your beautiful face anymore. I bury my face in your
chest. Your dark leather vest is cold on my cheek, but you smell warm. I
watch the pale hem of my dress brush against the bottom of your black pants.
Light and shadow... light and shadow.... I am mesmerized by it. I hold on to
you tighter, you are crushed by my embrace, I do not want to let go.

I do not know how long we have been dancing, to this old melody in our
heads. I stand on tiptoe, my bare feet crush our grass carpet.  My lips
touch yours for the briefest of moments. I release you, and turn my back.
Looking at you hurts me too much.

"...Is it time for goodbye?" I ask, my voice barely a whisper, I'm not sure
you can hear.

When I look back, you are gone.
